  • Good Morning Class, I hope you all had a great weekend today we are going to talk about blood and its components. Blood is important because it is what keeps us alive. Over the weekend you each got assigned a group and each group got one component of blood and have to share what you found. Does anyone know one of the 4 components of blood?
  • Mrs. M I know that red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma are the 4 components of blood,
  • Very good James! Red blood cells are very small, they are red flat shaped discs. The red blood cells have a round indent in the middle. Red blood cells do not have a nucleus and are definitely not hollow. Red blood cells are also called erythrocytes. The red blood cells look exactly like the picture on the board. Mina can you stand up and share your groups presentation of the physiology or function of erythrocytes, and then can you share another component of blood?
  • My name is Mina and the physiology or function of red blood cells is to carry or transport oxygen to our lungs, which allow us to breathe, and in return also keep us alive. Red blood cells also move oxygen all over our bodies. Erythrocytes are also responsible for taking carbon dioxide to our lungs for it to be exhaled so it can exit our bodies. Another component of blood is plasma. Plasma is usually yellow or clear and is known as the liquid portion of the blood. Plasma is mostly water, but also contains some proteins , salts, sugars, vitamins and much more. Nick will share what he found about the physiology of plasma
  • Hi I am Nick and plasma has a job of taking nutrients, hormones, electrolytes and oxygen to parts of the body that need it. Cells also get rid of their waste and along the way the plasma picks it up and helps remove that waste from the body. Plasma is also responsible for maintaining a healthy balance for the body.
  • Great job Mina and Nick you hit exactly what I wanted you too! The 3rd component of blood is platelets. Platelets are small, weirdly shaped, colorless and are fragments of cells. Platelets are also called thrombocytes! Platelets function is to form clots in our blood which help stop and prevent excessive bleeding. For example, when you have a tragic accident your blood vessel pops, leading to a lot of bleeding. The platelets work to clot and form a chunk to plug the hole in the popped blood vessel and stop the bleeding.
  • Now for the last blood component we will here from James!
  • I am James and the last blood component is white blood cells or leukocytes. White blood cells are outnumbered by red blood cells in the body, white blood cells are the only complete cells in the body because they have organelles and a nucleus. Leukocytes can be granulocytes or agranulocytes. White blood cells are responsible for helping the body fight infection and other diseases. Leukocytes work to destroy harmful bacteria and create antibodies.
  • Last but not least is Ashley who is going to be explaining one disease that effects two blood types
  • Lupus is mostly a genetic disease that is found to affect mostly people with blood type A and blood B. Lupus is an inflammatory disease that occurs when the immune system attacks its own tissues. Lupus affects the joints, skin, brain, lungs, heart and much more.
