  • Rocco Corresca was born in Italy. When Rocco Corresca was little, he lived in an orphanage with a lot of other young boys until he was 8 years old. This is important in Rocco's life because this is where he learned morals and how to live.
  • An old man named Tony "claimed" he was his grandfather and took him into his "beautiful house." Later on in his life, he taught Rocco how to beg and steal.
  • When Rocco went into Tony's house, all it was was a dark cellar, with 4 other boys and Tony said they were all his brothers. Each morning they would beat him up, until one of the boys, Francisco, told them to stop. Francisco later grew up with Rocco and helped him escape Tony.
  • Rocco and Francisco ran away from Tony and his house and found a fisherman whose name was Ciguciano and his daughter, Teresa. Ciguciano told the boys what Tony taught them was completely wrong. Ciguciano and Teresa were important to Rocco because they took care of them for 5 years and taught Rocco morals.
  • After sailing to America, Rocco and Francisco opened a shop in Newark, New Jersey. They made a bootblack business after learning from a bootblack and working under him. The store Rocco and Francisco had opened was called "The Best Shine for 10 Cents." This was a very important part of their story because this shows what all their work from nothing has led to.
  • Rocco and Francisco opened another parlor near South Ferry in New York. At the end of their story, Rocco was 19 with $700 saved. Francisco was 21 with $900 saved. The ending of the story was very important because it showed how America opened up a lot of opportunities for immigrants that work hard. Rocco was successful in his life because he worked hard and believed in himself.
