Storyboard Tekst

  • Title
  • Metaphor
  • Imagery
  • Dulce et Decorum Est is Latin for It is sweet and fitting. The title of the poem sets the reader up, because it is the complete opposite of the poem's thoughts on war. By creating this contrast, Owen is able to comment on the absurdity of many people's perception of war.
  • Speed and Pace
  • In the first stanza, Owen compares the soldiers to old beggars and hags. But one wouldn't expect young men who are in their prime to be compared to the old and withered. Through this metaphor, Owen is able to display the toll that the war has taken on these young men.
  • Diction
  • Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori
  • The speaker looks through misty panes and thick green light where [he] saw him drowning. One part of this image is the helplessness of the speaker. He can only look through the mask at the man dying, unable to go and help him. This helplessness reflects the insignificance of one singular soldier when trying to affect the tide of an entire war.
  • Sound Devices
  • In the first stanza, there is a very slow pace, as the men trudge forwards through sludge, limping onwards and fatigued. This is contrasted with the quickness of the gas, where there is fumbling and yelling. By changing the pace, Owen is able to better capture that moment, allowing for him to better convey the horrors of war.
  • Towards the end of the last stanza, Owen claims the reader would not tell children the old lie. He specifically uses the word children, rather than people or even adults. By using an innocent figure like a child, Owen is able to further appeal to the readers, and emphasize the corruption that war brings to the innocent.
  • When the gas grenades are dropped, the poem switches into the dialogue of someone yelling. By doing this, Owen is able to emphasize a shift in the poem from the slow and silent marching to the loud and quick fumbling of the soldiers. Through this, he is able to convey the unpredictability of war and its deceiving nature.
