  • A Deep Dive into the History of Zero
  • What if we think of nothing as a numerical value?
  • A Deep Dive into the History of Zero
  • 0 + 5 = 5y = 6x + 0, what is x?
  • - To provide context, people have always been able to understand the concept of nothingness. However, the invention of nothingness as a number helped mathematicians who struggled to perform even the simplest of arithmetic calculations.- The concept of zero helps our modern world function, without zero, there’s no calculus, which means no modern engineering or automation. Without zero, much of our modern world literally falls apart.
  • A Deep Dive into the History of Zero
  • Unlike with my discovery of gravity, I was assisted by dozens of mathematicians across centuries with the concept of zero.
  • - The concept of zero was first developed in India around A.D. 458, with cultural philosophies from Buddhism playing an important role.
  • Mathematical Application of Zero
  • 0
  • 0
  •
  • - The concept of zero eventually spread across Asia and Middle East, where it was used in algebraic concepts.
  • Mathematical Application of Zero
  • 324=300+20+4
  • 324+ 304_____________628
  • 304=300+000+4
  • 324+ 304____________628
  • - The concept of zero eventually made its way to Europe where it was popularized by mathematicians like Issac Newton. From this point forward, the zero would be used in various important studies including engineering and economics.
  • - Humans still struggle to fully understand the mathematical concept of zero, cognitive scientist Andres Nieder states that there are actual psychological steps understanding zero and its use in math.- Despite this challenge, zero can still be applied. Zero represents an "vacancy" in a string of digits, zero can be added and from subtracted from a number, and zero acts as a placeholder.
  • Zero as a placeholder is extremely important, before this invention math was inaccessible to the general public. Zero as a placeholder creates the idea that numbers can be written in a base system.
  • Math Worksheet:1) Can you understand that since zero means nothing, the creation of a symbol for nothing is extremely important to math?2) How would you likely read 304 without 0? Likely like 34, which is a different value and incorrect.
