  • The pay isn't the best, but at least I am able to help support my family
  • Many farm-girls were sent to work at the new and up-coming factories to earn money for their families. By 1828, 9/10 of the New England workforce was made up of by women. There was incentive to hire women for the mill owners because they could pay women less.
  • She fell in the factory and broke her neck, she instantly died!
  • Overall, the mill girls were paid very low wages, and eventually the wages were cut even more. However, the workers needed to help support their family so they continued to come to the factories.
  • The girls working in the factories worked long hours, starting their day at 5 am, breaking for breakfast at 7 am and dinner at 12:30 pm, and back at the factories from 1pm until 7pm.

  • The conditions within the early factories were very dangerous and many workers were injured or died. There was also poor ventilation within the factories which made it hard for the workers to breathe.
  • Between 1836-1850, the Lowell mill owners tripled the amount of looms and spindles, while only increasing the workers by 50%. The conditions became even harder for the girls in the factories.
  • Factory rules became stricter over the years, and Lowell mills announced a 15% wage cut. 800 factory women went on strike to demand the factories to listen to their requests....
