After Lyddie comes back from visiting her home, Mistress Cutler fires Lyddie. The Mistress also didn't let her leave, that was Triphena. Mistress Cutler will not let Lyddie go home, even though Lyddie wants to.
"She stood in the doorway trying to frame an excuse or apology, but as usual the words did not come quickly enough to mind. (44)
She was deciding if she should send Ezekial back to the south of money. Lyddie wants to report Ezekial for money, but she knows it's wrong, morally.
Lyddie has just left the tavern to walk to Lowell. Lyddie has walked 10 miles already. Lyddie has to stop walking because the rain made her stop and she has to seek shelter at the tavern.
"Then just at duck, the sky opened, and it began to rain- not light spring showers, but cold soaking torrents of rain, streaming down her face, icicling rivulets down her chest and legs." (47)
