Introducing Earl

- Now to introduce Earl, it was the second or third week of kindergarten and our teacher, Mrs Szczerbiak was making us decorate cardboard boxes. "It was me, Earl, and two girls whose names I forget. All the girls wanted to do was cover the box in glitter, but Earl and I recognized that this would look terrible" (Andrews, 78). Earl said we should make a gun out of it and I thought that was awesome. That day after school I went over to his house to play video games. But over the years as Earl and I became closer his house become more difficult to be at, with his father being sent to jail and a lot of step siblings moving in, it was just easier to hangout at my house.

- At first me and Earl had no idea what to do but then dad brought out his old collection of DVDs. Earl immediately decided that we needed to watch Aguirre, The Wrath of God. "It was incredible. It was confusing, and terrifying, and incredible. We had to pause every time there were subtitles, and we had to run and get dad to explain something or other" (Andrews, 81). Everything was perfect, from the German accents to the fact that EVERYBODY dies in the end.

- After we showed our classmates the movie and they hated it we decided that we would just forget about it. But one day a few years later dad bought a video camera. We immediately knew we needed to re-create Aguirre, the Wrath of God. We decided to shoot it at the park. We thought it would take 30 minutes but ended up taking three months. We didn't even finish it, we got through the first 10 minutes then gave up. "Earl wore a pot on his head, and it looked ridiculous. Nothing we had looked like cannons, or swords. Mom said we weren't allowed to bring furniture from the house to the park, and then when we did, we had Suspended Camera Privileges for a week" (Andrews, 107). After this film we made dozens more, starting our partnership.
