welcome to the hospital today we will be learning about the digestive system lets jump in and get started.
Mouth
Saliva contains an enzyme calledamylase which breaks down starches into sugar.
Your teeth help grind up food into smaller pieces.
Esophagus
YOUR esophagus is a 20 cm long tube that connects your mouth to your stomach
Its purpose is to close and prevent food from entering trachea (windpipe) and lungs
Stomach
Thestomach also releases acids and enzymes
Your stomach is a j-shaped sack that stores and helps further breakdown of food
The stomach physically churn the food which helps break apart the food into smaller pieces.
Small Intestine
The chyme enters the small intestine which is a 7 meter long tube. Also 90% of all nutrient absorption occurs in the small intestine.
Once the food molecules are brokendown even further by various chemicals, they move across the small intestine into thebloodstream.
Large Intestie
The large intestine (also called colon) is a 1.5 meter long tube.
the large intestine is to absorb water and to absorb any remaining nutrients from thefood before sending the undigested food to the rectum.
