  • Character Anaylysis
  • She couldn't make him look just like any other man to her. He looked like the love thoughts of women.
  • Honey, since you loose me and gimme privilege tuh tell yuh about mahself, Ah'll tell yuh. You done married one uh de best gamblers God ever made.
  • Setting Analysis
  • Joe noted the scant dozen of shame-faced houses in the sand and palmetto roots and said, God they call this a town? Why, 'tain't nothing but a raw place in de woods.
  • Theme
  • She couldn't make himlook like any other man to he. He looked like the love thoughts of women.
  • Janie is of course the main character of the story. She is driven by creating her own life, wanting to be with who she loves and how she wants to live. Teacake is the third husband of Janie and is the most significant one in her life. He would treat her fairly and fuel her sense of individuality and freedom.
  • Conflict
  • The pistol and rifle rang out almost together. The pistol just enough after the rifle to seem its echo. Tea Cake crumpled as his bullet buried itself in the joist over Janie's head.
  • A minute before she was just a scared human being fighting for its life. Now she was her sacrificing self with Tea Cake's head in her lap. She wanted him to live so much and he was dead.
  • It is impactful because the setting would create the main plot for Their Eyes were Watching God. The setting itself is in the rural, swamplands of Florida and is the hotbed of segregation and discrimination, as detailed in the book. The town they are in is full of sorrow and people who are disgruntled about their lives. This would create the setting and help create the life and struggles of Janie.
  • Point of View
  • Ah reckon ah done over-layed mah leavin' time, but ah figured you needed somebody tuh help yuh shut up de place. Since nobody else ain't round heah, maybe Ah kin get de job.
  • The main theme is love and self individuality. The theme of love is prevalent in the whole story since that is what Janie wanted the most. The theme of self individuality is prevalent also since Janie's goal was to become her own person and to find love for herself. Teacake would help her in being independent and in loving herself.
  • Language / Dialect
  • Janie, Ah would have give Jacksonville wid Tampa for a jump-back for you to be dere wid me. Ah started to come git yuh two three times... Ah was skeered, too skeered Ah might lose yuh.
  • The most climactic conflict in the book was Janie shooting Teacake in the book. The reason for this is that he was suffering from rabies and was becoming delirious and paranoid. This would lead to him trying to kill Janie but Janie prepared for this and after he tried to shoot her for the third time, she shot him and killed him. The reason this is impactful is that this would show how Janie did become what she wanted to be since she was not dependent on Teacake. Ultimately, she was now at peace with herself.
  • The impact of the changes of the POVs in the story helped create and define moments in events in the book and the overall story. Third person view of the story is told from the narrator and helps express the emotions and thoughts that Janie is holding back. First person view helps create personality in the characters.
  • They joked and went on till the people began to come in. Then he took a seat and made talk and laughter with the rest until closing time.
  • The dialect impacts the story by showing the way many African Americans would talk and speak in the rural south. It fits the story and even helps promote the setting of it being in a rural southern town in Florida. The dialect will also help in the plot with many characters. Ultimately, it would help make the characters believable in the story.
