scythe takes place in a city in 2040 and the main characters are Citra and Rowan we also meet a scythe with scythes are people that control the population and chose people to glean

the problems are introduced when we are introduced to a new character called scythe faraday who chose Citra and Rowan to be his apprentices which caused them some problems.

the main problem is within the scythe community where the community is split into two factions and the community invites people into it which causes problems like murder and political machinations. another conflict is that Rowan and Citra need to prove themselves so they can become scythes in the scythe community.

when Citra is chosen to become a scythe she is given a ring with gives her god like powers and control over death and when she is ordered to kill Rowan but instead punches him and gits his blood on her ring which gives him immunity for a year which one of the reasons she could not kill him is because she loves him and he loves her but they cant be together because of all the problems they need to deal with which is all the murders and Citra having to prove herself to the scythe community.

sense Rowan was not killed Citra helps him escape the scythes that want to kill him, and Citra and Rowan told each other that they will protect each other no matter.

when Rowan escapes Citra gives the ring that she earned to faraday and meets up with Rowan where she tells him that she has given up trying to be a scythe.
