- Fertilizer runoff is a major reason why nitrates and phosphates build up in the environment.
- Eutrophication occurs when there is a too much 'Food' in a body of water.Making algae explode harming the ecosystem
- Livestock manure and untreated human waste can also contribute to the problem.
- When it rains the ground softens so the animal manure and fertilizer begin to wash away.
- The rain causes run off which may go into a river that leads to another body of water.
- The extra nutrients cause algae to grow into large algal blooms.
- The algal blooms become large and begin to sit at the top of the water
- The algal blooms begins to block the sunlight from entering the ocean taking away nutrients which is necessary for
- This causes hypoxic and anoxic levels of dissolved oxygen
- The lack of oxygen causes animals aquatic life to die off and leaving some to try to escape the dead zone
- The algal blooms eventually die off as well
