  • Spring of 1963 King organized a demonstration in Birmingham, Alabama. Many families attended and police turned dogs and fire hoses on them. King was then arrested along with other attendants. This drew Nationwide attention.While in jail, King wrote a letter from Birmingham Jail. This letter explained how everyone was tired of waiting for things to change and explained his theory on non-violence.
  • On August 28, 1963, the March on Washington drew in people from all over the country. It held over 200,000 people at the Lincoln Memorial. At the march, King gave his "I have a Dream" speech. This speech was very impactful to the Civil Rights Movement. Part of his speech quoted, "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
  • The March on Washington resulted in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which authorized the federal government to enforce desegregation in publicly owned facilities. This also led to Martin Luther King Jr being awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. However this was not the end of all the struggle.
