  • BANK MORTGAGE LOANS
  • Joseph, you are not...
  • Why did they deny my request? I had the qualifications...
  • Joseph, an African American living in Clarkston, Michigan, is looking for a new neighborhood to live in. He thinks he found the perfect house for him. In order to buy the house, he will need to ask for a mortgage from the government.
  • HOUSE For Sale
  • Joseph walked to the bank, full of excitement. He finally found his dream house, all he needs is a mortgage. He was sure that the bank would give him it because of his qualifications.
  • BANK MORTGAGE LOANS
  • He met with the manager at the bank, but something felt off. The manager seemed to be annoyed and disgusted that Joseph was there. He sat down and handed the manger a paper full of his qualifications. However, the manager did not seem surprised.
  • To Joseph's surprise, the manager denied his mortgage. The manager told Joseph he wasn't qualified for the loan. Joseph was confused and angered by this, his dream home was taken from his grasp. He knew he had the right qualifications. Accepting defeat, Joseph left and continued looking for houses.
  • A few days later, the house caught someone's eye again. Owen, a white man who just moved from Washington liked the same home Joseph did. Owen had the same qualifications as Joseph, he walked to the bank to ask for a mortgage for the house.
  • Once arrived, Owen was greeted by the manager. This time the manager seemed very pleased to see a customer. He quickly introduced himself, asking Owen what he could help him with. Owen mention getting a mortgage and the manager led him to hid office to discuss more.
  • Once in the office, Owen handed the manager his qualifications. This time, though they were the same as Joseph's, the manager seemed very impressed and pleased. Happy with the qualifications of Owen, the manager gave Owen the large mortgage.
  • Although Owen and Joseph had the same qualifications to get a mortgage, the manager gave it to Owen because of his race. This is what many African Americans faced during the 20th century. Since banks were more willing to work with Whites rather then Blacks, Whites had an advantage that Blacks could never have because the color of their skin.
