- One day Ikwor Edem the king's wife took her little daughter down to the spring to wash her as she was covered with yaws. The tortoise happened to be up at a palm tree taking nuts for his midday meal. While he was plucking the nuts one nut fell down.
- The little daughter seeing the good food cried for it. The mother not knowing any better picked up the palm nut and gave it to her daughter. The tortoise saw this and climbed down the tree immediately and asked the queen where his palm nut was. The queen said that see gave it to her daughter. The tortoise who very much wanted the king's magic drum decided to make this a big problem and force the king to give the drum
- I did not know the palm nut was yours. I did not steal anything. If you have anything to say to the king I will take you before him.
- I am a poor man. I came here to take palm nuts for me and my family but you took my palm nut and gave it to your daughter. I shall tell the whole matter to the king.
- When they reached the castle the queen told the king what happened. The king asked what the tortoise wanted in exchange of the palm nut. The tortoise immediately pointed at the drum The king wanted the tortoise to leave so he agreed.
