  • Hans Janssen and his son, Zacharias Janssen, invented the first primitive microscope in 1590, which contributed to cell theory.
  • ROBERT HOOKE
  • In 1665, he examined very thin slices of cork and discovered a plethora of tiny pores that resembled the walled compartments in which a monk would live. Hooke named them cells as a result of this association.
  • He made a simple microscope that magnified at 250x. He was the first to discover bacteria and protozoa. He was the first to see the bacteria, which he called animacules.

  • He was the first scientist to observe plant reproduction through cell division. He published his findings in 1832, naming the process he witnessed binary fission.
