- The soldier reaches up and sprays a long, red X on my mother's door. (10)
- June turns Day and his family in to the republic, getting his mother killed
- Day and Tess go to visitDay's family and they see the red X with the line through it.
- Day and June meet for the first time
- "He has blue eyes,dirt on his face, and a beat up old cap on, and I think he might be the most beautiful boy I've ever seen." (109)
- Day and June have their first kiss.
- "He pulls me to him. I take a breath before he touches his lips to mine." (137).
- June and Day escape together
- "I have no time to stop what happens next. The captain lifts his gun and points it at my mother. Then shoots her in the head. (157).
