  • Pilavian and his colleagues began an experiment because of kitty genoveses murder and the wonders that arose as to why no one helped. In this experiment 4,450 subjects were a part of the study, where they were observed on the NY subways on 8th ave between the Hampton and the Bronx’s.
  • Participants
  • The female observers were each strategically placed in the adjacent and critical area of the wagon. The objective was to have both observers collect as much data as possible from subjects in both areas. They both recorded the race, sex, and location of the subjects and they were both required to converse with the subjects with the goal of getting them to comment on the situation.
  • This happened between the hours of 11AM and 3PM on weekdays. The aim of this study was to investigate whether diffusion of responsibility applies to all situations and hat other factors may influence helping behaviors.
  • Drunk victim
  • The experiment consisted of 4 teams with 2 males and 2 females each. Where each team boarded a train of 7 ½ minute nonstop train, 4 victims would stage a fall where they were either drunk or ill, black or white. The females would observe and record data. In case that the victim received no help there was a model present who after a certain time would help if no one else did.
  • ill victim
  • The observer who was placed in the critical area of the wagon, the 1st observer, was required to record the total number of people in the wagon and the comments people were making in her area. The 2nd observer, who was placed in the adjacent area, would record the time it took for the 1st person to help and the time it took for someone to help after the model helped.
  • Conclusion
  • There was a tendency of the same race helping only in the case of drunk people. It seems like the black drunk victims helped each other more than the white victims. 89% of the time the drunk victims were helped, indicating that some people were hesitant to help the drunk victims (on the average 109 seconds). In addition, people left the area more on trials with the drunk in comparison with the cane victim (ill).
  • -The old lady was having a fatigue and loss of breath and turning pale -A woman was sitting down and approach to the old lady’s location handing her a bottle of water and offering her seat as well as a young man who was standing behind her. They start asking for help to other passengers but clearly seem to not care as much as they did on the lady’s health. -The old lady was the same race as the persons who helped her while the others seem to look at her with face but not do nothing, they were black and barely white persons.
  • Victims who appeared to be ill received the most help than those who appeared to be drunk. Men helped more than women Tendency for same-race helping was frequent and it increased with the drunk victims as compared to the ill ones. There was no proof of diffusion of responsibility; it proved the opposite of diffusion of responsibility. Observation of an emergency creates an emotional arousal state in the bystander. As the cost goes up, diffusion of responsibility goes up. Cost-Reward theory
