  • 2-Yes, well it is certainly open to all communities of color and class
  • Ms. Hanson and George discuss lack of inclusivity
  • 4-I know that learning takes shape in how people, ideas, tools, resources and relationships move as people engage in social practice toward new futures (Barton, 2018). The STEAM contest has always been a male dominated annual contest. We are concerned that some of the equipment will be too complicated and heavy for girls to use.
  • 1-Well, I just took a workshop on STEAM design andI know that it should be designed for everyone, regardless of gender, agesocial status (Castek, 2019)
  • 3- Well, diverse learners are grounded inexperiences and making and I think it’s important to know that it is not specificto gender. Your company could considerhow to be inclusive of all communities and cultures. (Castek, 2019).
  • Ms. Hanson continues to advocate for inclusion
  • 2- I am all for intersectionality, where many social divisions influence each other, but it has been an annual tradition for males only. I will have to talk to the board and see what they say?
  • 1-My student has been in a girls only makerspace club and learned how to confidently use equipment (Capel, 2021) and even taught other male students certain technology skills in her spare time.
  • 3-Okay, please do George. I’m confident this student would create something amazing and has much skill in the maker community.
  • Back at School
  • 4-Thanks Ms. Hanson
  • 2-Okay thanks Ms. H. Did you by chance tell them that I’m Asian? Maybe that’s also a reason they won’t let me register?
  • 3-I did not tell them your race, Sherise. But if it comes up at all, I will be explaining to them from a standpoint of Critical Race Theory (CRT) where the intersectionality of race, gender, class and disability are forms of inequality (Waite, 2021). And it’s not okay to exclude students because of any of these.
  • 1-Hey Sherise, I talked to the organizers of the contest and they will speak with their board and get back to me.
  • Ms. Hanson draws on her experience with STEAM design to explain how the organizers need to be more inclusive.
  • Back in Ms. Hanson's Office
  • 2-Hi it’s George from the STEAM contest. I wanted to let you know that we spoke with the Board and they have decided to be more inclusive and open the contest to girls, too. But there is one condition…
  • 1-Hi Ms. Hanson speaking
  • Ms. Hanson makes good points as she explains to George about Sherise's skills. George understands and needs to talk to the board.
  • Ms. Hanson agrees to the condition
  • 1-Oh that’s great news! What is the condition?
  • Sherise talks to Ms. Hanson about the discussion she had with George the organizer of the contest.
  • Ms. Hanson tells Sherise the good news
  • Thank you so much, Ms. Hanson! No one can stop the MAKER in ME!
  • After a long discussion, they are going to let you and other girls enter the contest!
  • George calls Ms. Hanson back with good news
  • 2-They want you on the organizing committee as they feel that you could really help make this a more maker friendly event
  • Ms. Hanson agrees as she has lots to share and explain about inclusive design of makerspaces.
  • 3-I would be very happy to. I have so many things to share about accessibly inclusion, diversity, and the design of the makerspace contest (Yi, 2018).
  • Sherise is thrilled and knows she is a true MAKER at heart.
