What is a Case Study?

- Welcome to Qualitative Case Study Research! Let's start with, "What the heck is a case study, anyways?"
- Isn't a "case study" just 1 of something? Like, I'm 1 person, so I'm a case study, or this is 1 bench, so it's a case study?
- No. That's a VERY common misconception, but 1 of something doesn't necessarily mean "case study." Conversely, more than 1 of something doesn't necessarily mean it's NOT a case study.
- Imagine some cows in a field. Pretend that they're different ideas that you might research.
- Now imagine the fence being the "bounded system" in case study--what you allow inside the fence and what you take out of it is based on what you're trying to research. So, maybe only one cow for a specific reason, maybe only cows that do a certain thing, and so on. But the cows that don't fit those parameters get put in a different field. The cow or cows left in this particular fenced-in field are YOUR case study.
- That's really helpful! I've still got a lot of learn, but the idea that I'm putting concepts into a "bounded system" for a particular research purpose does make "case study" a lot clearer!
