Analysis of Major Characters
Tim O'Brien
Tim enters the war because of shame and soon learns that many men do brave things because of same and guilt. Tim is the narrator, protagonist, and author. He uses his story telling to cope with the memories and realities of war.
Jimmy Cross
Jim joined the cadets in college for credit because his friends did. He carries with him love letters from Martha. These distract him and later he burns them. His traits are; mature,responsible, and a poor leader. He carries the guilt for the platoon so they don't have to.He is a Christ like symbol. Not only does he have the initials but his last name is cross and he often carries the burden for all the men.
Mitchell Sanders
Mitchell is from Ohio He has a sense of humor and enjoys storytelling. His traits are; likeable, loyal, and prudent. He carries with him his art of storytelling and believes that stories don't need morals. He helps the author make a point that the novel is not to teach a moral but to portray an experience.
Kiowa
Kiowa is Native American. He is Baptist. His traits are; diligent and honest, introspective and compassionate. He wears moccasins in order to tread silently. Kiowa’s death is symbolic of the senseless tragedy of war.
