  • We were surrounded by sand; we couldn't see any trail markers anywhere; we were lost.
  • You might be wondering how I got into this situation. It all started when my family and I went on a six hour hike through some slot canyons. Slot canyons are so narrow, you can you can touch both sides at the same time.
  • We had to park our car about a mile from the trail because the rest of the road to the trail was too rocky. We made sure to bring a lot of water and snacks for the long hike.
  • Oh boy! It's hot outside!
  • The mile walk was like walking on the sun. We were all tired by the end of it, but excited to get started hiking in the slot canyons.
  • We're finally all up!
  • The slot canyon was nice and cool; however, after we left the canyon, the sun glared down at us from the sky. Luckily we were prepared and brought enough water.
  • MAN! I'm thirsty
  • Then drink some water!
  • Oh no! Some poeple coming this way! What to do..
  • We were soon out of the desert and soon into a slot canyon so thin, we had to walk sideways at some points. We ran into some tricky obstacles, including running into some other people going the opposite direction at one of the narrowest parts, but my dad always thought up a solution.
  • I've got an idea!
  • We finally exited the second slot canyon, and now we just needed to walk through the desert again to get back. I was starting to get a headache; therefore, we decided to take the shortcut on our map. Unfortunately, there were two paths that could have been the shortcut.
  • This path looks like its the correct one.
  • When we finally reached the first of two slot canyons, we were met with a small cliff. My dad and my brother, who are both tall, helped my mom and me up. Then began the hike through the first slot canyon.
  • Dang it! I think we're lost! Don't worry, we have enough food and water to last us tonight. We could last ten nights if we had to!
  • It didn't take long for us to realize we were lost; there were no trail markers in sight. Fortunately, my dad had packed enough so we could've stayed the night there if we absolutely needed to.
  • We need to find a trail marker! EVERYONE! STAY VIGILANT!
  • We luckily were able to find the trail markers again, and get back on the path, but we had a new problem. My headache had gone away, but my mom was starting to get one. And this was a really bad headache.
  • Oh boy, I'm starting to get a bad headache!
  • Let's.. take.. a short break.. from walking... please..
  • We were getting closer to the end, but we had two parts left, a steep hill, and the mile road back. My mom's headache was getting worse, so we tried to mitigate the pain as best we could, but the steep climb wasn't helping.
  • Liam, let's go ahead and see if we can bring the car down the mile road. Sam, look after your mom and help her up!
  • On our way up, we met some nice people who had brought their car over the mile road and were kind enough to give us a ride back to our car. When we got to the car, my mom drank some Gatorade and took some Tylenol and her head started to get better. In the end, we were all OK.
  • The moral of the story is to always be prepared. We were prepared for the worst. We could've stayed the night outside when we were lost, or waited the night for my mom's head to get better. Luckily, neither of those cases had to happen, but we were prepared for them.
