THE VERY LAST FIRST TIME by JAN ANDREWS
EVA AND HER MOTHER WALKED TO THE SEA TO GATHER MUSSELS
EVA GATHERED MUSSELS ON THE SEA FLOOR ALL BY HERSELF
Eva Padlyat lived in an Inuit village on Ungava Bay in northern Canada. She loved to walk on the bottom of the sea like everyone in the village did to gather mussels to eat. Today was the first day Eva would walk on the bottom of the sea alone!
EVA EXPLORED THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA BUT GOT LOST!
Eva and her mother grabbed their sleds each with a shovel, ice chisel and mussel pan. They made it to the shore just in time to see that the tide had gone out, leaving only the thick ice above and the seabed below.
EVA FOUND HER WAY THROUGH THE DARKNESS TO THE LIGHT
Eva lowered herself down into the frozen sea down to the seabed. Working by candlelight, she had soon gathered a pan full of mussels. Feeling proud of herself, Eva decided she had some time left to explore the bottom of the sea!
EVA WAS REUNITED WITH HER MOTHER ONCE MORE
Eva sang as she explored the rock pools and played in the heaps of seaweed. Suddenly, Eva realized that she had gone too far. The tide would be coming back in. Moving too quickly, she dropped her candle and the light went out! She could not see through the darkness.
Eva gathered her courage and felt around in the darkness. She relit her candles and made her way back to her mussel pan and the opening in the ice. She could see the bright moon was shining through the hole. When her mother came to fetch her, Eva was dancing happily in the moonlight!
Safe with her mother again on top of the ice, Eva declared proudly, “that was my last very first - my very last first time for walking alone on the bottom of the sea!”
