EMPERORS AND DYNASTIES
MANDATE OF HEAVEN
The Right to Rule is given by the Gods in Heaven and can be taken away!
GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS
There were over 500 emperors of China. Emperors had absolute power. Rule was passed down to a male in the family, usually the oldest son. Whenever a new family took power, a new dynasty would begin. The dragon, a symbol of good luck, was associated with the emperor and his family.
The Chinese believed that their emperors were given the right to rule by the gods called the Mandate of Heaven. The Zhou created this idea that problems or natural disasters were because the emperor had lost the blessing of the gods due to his bad behavior. They used this to justify their overthrow of the Shang.
First ancient China was ruled by a feudal system where lords owned lands and famers worked the fields. Under the empires, civil servants worked under the emperor to run the cities, collect taxes, and enforce the laws. Men had to pass exams to become government officials, but they were also wealthy landowners who were part of the nobility.
