- William H. Russell was a businessman in the early 1860s. He had an idea that people could ride horses and ponies in order to deliver mail faster.
- On April 3rd, 1860, the Pony Express was created. Riders will carry mail across the country.
- On April 13, 1860, I, Sam Hamilton, carried the first eastern Pony Express mail into Sacramento.
- The fastest run for the Pony Express was when President Lincoln's first address to Congress was delivered to Sacramento in March, 1861. It took 7 days and 17 hours after leaving St. Joseph
- After the transcontinental telegraph was invented, the need for the Pony Express was gone. On October 26, 1861, it was closed
