- Hi Im Susan, and I study climate, whales, and much more. Studying global climates, like the arctic waters isn't an easy thing. I love my job and can't wait to take you through my career.
- Humpback whales, specifically, travel from the Arctic to warmer waters. They do this because warmer waters allows them to mate and reproduce.
- But scientists and I have found that they carry information about the arctic waters, when they migrate. By studying these whales were able to recover information about the Arctic. This is great for scientist, because we getting information without traveling there.
- Whales allow us to monitor different waters. Especially with climate change this information we are recovering is extremely beneficial. Whales are a unique and helpful species, that have so much to offer.
- We collect information by using a biopsy dart. This takes minimal amount of their skin and blubber, which allows testing to be done on it. This harmless process, gives us so much information about the whales, the arctic waters, health, and climate conditions.
- These samples can also show us what the whale has eaten and where it came from. This information helps to add to research on climate change. This is because it shows when there's less of a type of food and that is normally caused by death from unusual climates.
