  • In fact, Charles Darwin's 4th and 5th principles talk about this! This is also called the "Differential Reproductive Success". The organisms within a species that are most fit will be able to produce more offspring than those who aren't. This is because those who are fit for the environment ("Survival of the Fittest")have higher chances of survival, and are able to live to reproduce. Over time, the species will evolve, and more species would be formed with characteristics that help the organism in the environment. For Viceroy butterflies, those resembling Monarchs have higher rates of survival, allowing them to produce more offspring than those who don't look like Monarchs.
  • I had a feeling that Charles Darwin had a principle about this.
  • Of course! Adaptation is when an organism is able to adapt, or fit, into an environment. Adaptations generally help increase an organism's chance of survival. Natural selection is when the environment selects the favorable traits, and the organisms with those traits would live, and the organisms without that trait would perish sooner. Lastly, speciation is when the favored traits/adaptations would be more prominent in society, and the unfavored ones will slowly disappear over time. All three concepts are closely interconnected and play a huge role in natural selection and Charles Darwin's research. I now have to send both of you back to NYC, but I had a great time getting to know you!
  • I was kind of confused about adaptation, natural selection, and speciation, could you please explain it?
  • Oh! I guess I forgot to formally introduce myself. I'm Flora Darwin, the direct descendent of Charles Darwin
  • Before we go, I have one last question: How do you know so much about natural selection?
