  • This scene along with many others, are scenes where Macbeth wants the blood off his hands. In this scene in paricular, Macbeth had just killed Duncan and he goes back to Lady Macbeth and asks for his hands to be cleared from blood. The blood represents the guilt of him killing Duncan and the instant regret he faces after each of his killings. The blood can be washed off with water, but the violent action can not be forgotten, and that is what the blood represents,

  • Macbeth imagines many different things that represent his internal guilt he is experiencing. In this scene he imagines a bloody dagger facing Duncans chamber. The dagger, which was used to kill Duncan previously. This hallucination is a manifestation of guilt, of the violence that is about to happen
  • I see thee still,And on thy blade and dudgeon gouts of blood,Which was not so before. There’s no such thing.It is the bloody business which informsThus to mine eyes. (2.1.45–49)
  • Later on, Macbeth has a change of mind. He now realizes that all violence will always lead to more violence. He is ready to fight for power. This is also foreshadowing to upcoming murders in the play.
  • 'It will have blood they say: blood will have blood. ' (3.4. 124)
