- Ralph, Piggy, Sam, and Eric realize that Piggy's glasses have been stolen by Jack and his tribe. Piggy is left with poor eyesight, and there's no way to light fire.
- "A bit" (Golding 168).
- Ralph blows the conch to call a meeting. The older boys of Ralph's group begin to discuss what they should do in response to Jack stealing the fire.
- "You call an assembly, Ralph, we got to decide what to do" (Golding 168).
- "Supposing we go, looking like we used to, washed and hair brushed—after all we aren't savages really and being rescued isn't a game—" (Golding 170).
- At the end of the boys' assembly, they decide to confront Jack's tribe for Piggy's glasses. Ralph wants the confrontation to be civilized so he suggests they wash and clean themselves.
- "I'm going to him with this conch in my hands...Look, I'm goin' to say, you're stronger than I am and you haven't got asthma. You can see, I'm goin' to say, and with both eyes...Give me my glasses, I'm going to say—you got to!" (Golding 171).
- "We ought to take spears. Even Piggy" (Golding 170).
- Sam and Eric attempt to convince Ralph that they should put face paint like Jack's tribe, but they are unsuccessful. Ralph wants his group to look like civilized people. Piggy takes the conch with him.
- "But they'll be painted! You know how it is" (Golding 172).
- "Well, we won't be painted because we aren't savages" (Golding 172).
- Ralph's group arrives at Castle Rock where Jack's tribe is located. Ralph tries to be reasonable, but the two tribes end up fighting.
- "Ralph! Don't leave me!" (Golding 176).
- "Thief! Thief!" (Golding 177).

- Jack has his tribe tie up Sam and Eric when Ralph tries to talk things out with Jack once more. Ralph is trying to make Jack stop.
