  • The Strike
  • Why do we have to learn in Afrikaans? This isn't fair. Things need to change.
  • I'm not going to school today!
  • I'm not going either!
  • The Peaceful Protest
  • This should do something about it!
  • Let's march for what's right!
  • These kids shouldn't have to learn in Afrikaans.
  • Police Take Action
  • This dog needs to get out of our way. Nothing can stop us.
  • Pow
  • Down with Afrikaans
  • After them!
  • The spread of rebellion in other Soweto schools started with students not going to school in a chance to change education and racial inequalities in South Africa. This strike happened because the government forced students to learn their main school subjects in Afrikaans. Since Black students didn’t know the language and were already learning in schools with many inequalities, this was the last straw that started their strike.
  • Police Shooting
  • Get out of here!
  • Stop now!
  • Black students disagreed with learning and being forced to speak in Afrikaans. Teachers also didn’t want to teach in Afrikaans due to not knowing the language well enough. The Black students in Soweto collaborated in creating a peaceful march. They would march to Orlando Stadium with about 20,000 students participating in their peaceful protest against the government’s apartheid laws in South Africa.
  • Days of Riots
  • Stop this at once! I will shoot again!
  • The police blocked the protestors from where they were headed. They released a dog into the crowd of children and adults. The protestors killed the dog which was the start of many tragedies.
  • Celebraiton of the End
  • Do you know what today is?
  • There are so many people who protested so we can appreciate them for trying to make South Africa equal.
  • Every year...
  • It's South African Youth Day! We have the day off!
  • There was a shot fired in the air creating chaos. This caused panic in the crowd as they tried running away. More police shot into the group of protestors and children causing many to either be dead or wounded.
  • What about my brother? Where is he?
  • Although many were shot, the protest changed to riots that ended up lasting several days. After the riots, about 175 people died and over 1,200 people were wounded and arrested, the majority of people this happened to were black. Even more people died due to the riots over the next year.
  • I hope all this is for something. Maybe it'll end this terrible society of ours.
  • You can't break us!
  • The Soweto Uprising is now considered a holiday in South Africa. This is because it was one of the main historic protests against Apartheid. The protests also played a factor in the end of Apartheid, which is another reason why it’s considered a holiday.
