- I love the ocean, it is such a beautiful place, as you can see there are many things that destroy its beauty. Marine debris like plastic can injure and kill marine life. They destroy habitats, entangle marine life, and cause them to ingest the debris and cause blockage. This is Rafael and this is his story…

- I Rafael saw my best friend Flippy die due to a great ingestion of this marine debris. He mistaked a bottle cap for food and ate it. He got really sick and died the next day… We were just swimming around and hanging out like we always do…

- I feel hurt and scared. I don't want what happened to Flippy to happen to other turtles and other animals. I feel scared because I don't know what will happen to me…
- Fish like Flippy are at a great risk of this garbage in the ocean. Other animals like turtles get tangled in fishing nets. Areas where there are many turtle habitats are often heavily fished and the turtles that are foraging and/or resting in these areas can become entangled and drown. It is believed that at least 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year, and make up 80 percent of all marine debris from surface waters to deep-sea sediments. Rafael, how do you feel about this in your home?
- I completely understand how you feel. Plastic pollution is particularly dangerous because it does not fully biodegrade in the environment. Plastic pollution has been found in a wide range of organisms and habitats, including coral reefs, estuaries, beaches, and the deep sea. Since plastic does not decompose, it continually accumulates in landfills and in the environment.
- It could… This is why we must take action right away and be able to save other amazing creatures like you and protect them from fishermen and debris. Try to recycle more often to make sure that plastics are recycled and are not spilled into the ocean. And maybe, the water around us can look like this...
