  • By order of the NKVD, you must evacuate your house immediately! You have five minutes to get out!
  • I may be an old man. girl, but that doesn't mean I've lost my mind. Your father'll never find us. Give up hope now!
  • I will draw landmarks on the handkerchief Father gave me. He can use it to find us!
  • My baby. My sweet baby. She's gone. No! No, no no!
  • If we sign, we sign away all our freedom and hope! I will never sign!
  • Sign this document and you go free in 25 years. If you don't, you are doomed to wake up everyday in this cruel life until the day you pigs die!
  • It was 1941 in Lithuania and a quiet night in the house of Kostas and Elena Vilkas and their two children, Lina and Jonas. But that night was disrupted with a bang on the door. A NKYD officer was waiting to deport the whole family! Elena and the children would be together, but Kostas was to be separated from the rest.
  • I have heard talk among the pigs. You are a good artist. Draw me a copy of this map, and I'll see that you are rewarded.
  • If I do this, then maybe I'll find out where Father is!
  • Conditions were horrible in the train car that Lina was inside with her mother and brother. There was lice everywhere, hopeless people, a grouchy old man, and a new mother whose baby was on the brink of death. But all Lina could think about was how to get word to her father of where they were. All of a sudden, she got an idea. Lina knew how to draw, and she could draw pictures of where they were and try to pass them along to her father!
  • Elena was a beautiful woman, so she'll be buried in her most beautiful dress. And we'll have a true funeral for her, with a burial marker and everything.
  • After a very long ride, Lina, Jonas, and Elena finally arrive at their destination. It's a labor camp in the snowy mountains of Siberia. There, all the deportees are treated as cattle, forced to work from dawn to dusk in harsh conditions with hardly anything to eat. Only one good thing has come out of all this. She met a wonderful boy named Andrius. While they were at the camp, the NKVD told the people to sign a document that gives all their freedom away to the NKVD. If they do, then they'll go free after 25 years. Lina and many others refuse to do so.
  • That's amazing! But who informed you of where we were?
  • My name is Dr. Samadurov. I am an American doctor who can do two things. I can give aid to the sick here at the camp and I can alert America of the horrors going on here. I can help!
  • One of the officers. A man named Nikolai Kretszky.
  • Even though Lina chose not to sign the document, the NKVD still knew that she could be of use to them. One day, the commanding officer called Lina in to his office. He told her that she was going to draw copies of maps for him. In return, she'd get incentives like cigarettes. Lina accepted the offer because drawing was her favorite thing and she hoped by seeing the maps she may learn where all the other camps are, hopefully then where her father is.
  • Andrius found out about Lina's new job, and wanted to try to help her. Because his mother also works for the NKVD, he was able to steal a file that held all the answers to the questions Lina had about her father. But after seeing the file, she learned that her father had been killed. This broke Elena's heart. She wasn't the same afterwards, even after they were moved to a different camp. Eventually, the diseases being spread and the heartbreak eating away at her became too much, and Elena passed.
  • Lina now is truly beginning to feel hopeless. Her mother and father have died, and the love of her life was taken away and she doesn't know where he is. But just when all hope seems lost, one of the NKVD officers had a change of heart and made it possible for an American doctor to come and help the deportees! Because of the American's help and because Lina always knew in her heart that good would prevail, she was able to finally become free, marry Andrius, and share her story with the world.
