  • One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is that fear and suspicion are destructive. One thing that shows this is when the residents of Maple Street start to mob at Les Goodman's house just because his car started up. They are so in fear that they suspect that a longtime resident of their street may be an alien just because of the fact that his car started up. Second, when the residents see a dark figure coming out of the darkness, they are so fearful that Charlie ends up shooting him with little hesitation, only to find out that the figure is Pete Van Horn, who just went to Floral Street to see if they were having the same problems of power going out. Finally, at the end of the story, the alien figures say that once you fiddle with the resident's power a little bit, they become so fearful and suspicious of innocent people so quickly, that they end up destroying themselves from the inside out. In conclusion, fear and suspicion are destructive is a major theme in "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" because simple things changing can end up shrouding everything in fear, resulting in destroying each and every one of themselves.
