- When the Family dog emerges into the house after the house recognizes its voice, he was hungry and angry; "The dog frothed at the mouth, lying at the door, sniffing, its eyes turned to fire." This is an example of hyperbole because there is exaggeration; the dogs eyes weren't actually on fire, but they probably looked angry or intense.
- "I'm starving"
- A gust of wind pushes a tree branch through the kitchen window, knocking down a cleaning liquid into the stove, and causes the fire to start. " The house tried to save itself" This is an example of personification; the house is portrayed as a living entity responding to the fire in a human like manner to "protect itself".
- "The fire must be put out this instant."
- "Help, help! Fire! Run, run!"
- "Today is August 5th, 2026, today is August 5th, 2026, today is..."
- Amidst the wreckage and smoke, only a solitary wall stood tall.
