  • In 563 B.C., a man named Siddhartha Gautama was born in a castle in Nepal. Siddhartha grew up in luxury and happiness. He was sheltered from religion, knowledge and human suffering. His father was a wealthy king, and his mother died 7 days after Siddhartha's birth. Siddhartha Gautama was predicted by a wise old man that he would be either a great king or religious leader that would change the world in the future. But his father wanted him to be a king.
  • But one day he realized he wasn't that happy, and he wanted to see the world he left with one of his servants. He left it all behind to pursue the path of truth when he saw the poverty and sickness in his society. He saw 4 things that shocked him. 1. A sick person crying in pain 2. An old person 3. A dead person 4. A holy man. Siddhartha was confronted with the realities of human weakness.
  • Siddhartha decided to become a holy man himself and snuck out of the palace brining his servant with him. He changed into simple cloths and gave his royal robes to his servant to bring back. He also cut all his hair off.
  • Siddhartha wandered for six years around northern India. Among that time he found a group of monks who believed that if he ate and drank as little as possible and thought a lot they would understand the meaning of life. Siddhartha found this did not work for him so he kept going.
  • To achieve enlightenment, Siddhartha vowed to sit under a fig tree and meditate till he achieved suffering, At the end of the long meditation, he became the Buddha. This spot under the Bodhi tree is still preserved to this day.
  • Then after 80 years the Buddha died, his word was still being spread through his disciples. His last words to his followers were, "All component things in the world are changeable. They're not lasting. Work hard to gain your own salvation.
  • He went back and told the monks what he had discovered and they became his first disciples.
  • They went off and spread the word to everyone in the Buddha's old village.
  • Today millions of people still follow the teachings of the Buddha.
