  • COORDINATE GEOMETRY
  • Today we will study about coordinate geometry
  • HOW TO PLOT COORDINATE POINTS ON CARTESIAN PLANE
  • STUDENTS LOOK AT THE WHITEBOARD NOW.
  • The important rules to plot a point in the cartesian plane are given below:The first coordinate in the ordered pair (x) represents the left/right movement of a point from the origin. The second coordinate in the ordered pair (y) represents the up/down movement of the point from the origin. The point of intersection of these two lines is called origin. The point on the coordinate plane is represented by the ordered pair (x, y).
  • Example 1:Plot the coordinates (3, 5) and (5, -4) in the cartesian coordinate system.Solution:Step 1: Draw the coordinate axes, such as the x-axis and y-axisStep 2: Choose the unit such that 1 centimetre represents one unit on both the x-axis and y-axis.Step 3: The coordinate (3, 5) represents the distance from the origin to the positive x-axis is 3 units and the distance from the origin to the positive y-axis is 5 units. Now, mark these points on the coordinate plane, and name it as “P”.Step 4: The coordinate (5, -4) represents the distance from the origin to the positive x-axis is 5 units and the distance from the origin to the negative y-axis is 4 units. Mark the coordinate point in the plane and label it as “Q”.Step 5: Therefore, the point P (3, 5) lies in the first quadrant and the point Q (5, -4) lies in the fourth quadrant.
  • Example 2- In which quadrant or on which axis each of the following point lie? (−3,5),(2,0),(−3,−5),(4,−1)SolutionIn the first quadrant, x and y-coordinate of a point are positive. In the second quadrant, x-coordinate is negative and y-coordinateis positive. So, (−3,5) lies in second quadrant. In the third quadrant, x and y-coordinate are negative. So, (−3,−5) lies in the third quadrant. In the fourth quadrant, x-coordinate is positive and y-coordinateis negative. So, (4,−1) lies in fourth quadrant.Any point on the x-axis have the value of y-coordinate =0So, (2,0) lies on the x-axis.
