  • In this battle the Americans were no match for the British. The Continental Army was greatly outnumbered by the British. In all the British lost 377 men while the Americans lost 1,407. Washington did not want to retreat or give up he wanted to keep on fighting. Thomas Mifflin made the decision to retreat after he saw the position they were in. He knew the Continental Army would only survive this battle if they made the decision to retreat.
  • Battle of Trenton
  • When the Americans were retreating the British were chasing them until they crossed the Delaware River. In the weeks that followed, the British chased the Americans through New York, New Jersey, and across the the river to Pennsylvania.
  • Battle of Trenton
  • As the army starts to give up hope Washington has to this of a way to get them motivated. To motivate his men he read them "The Crisis" by Thomas Paine. He also told them that they were going to plan on attacking the Hessians that were camped in New Jersey.
  • Reenlistments
  • Late on December 25, Washing and his army crossed the ice-chocked Delaware River to head to attack the Hessians. The cold weather and snow chilled the men. After crossing the river they than will start there late night march to Trenton, New Jersey.
  • When the soldiers reached Trenton they caught the Hessians by surprise so they surrendered. The Continentals Army won this battle because of the surprise attack. This allowed them to take in 868 prisoners. This was a big boost in the soldiers confidence.
  • Since the soldiers got more confidence and faith in the army after the battle of Trenton soldiers resigned up to serve in the army for another year. They were now more motivated to serve in Washington's Continental Army. This was a big moment for the army because it helped the army grow and get ready to fight more battles in the American Revolution.
