  • Gina is a wonderful little girl who was born with Smith-Lemli-Opitz Syndrome (SLOS). Although she has many challenges ahead, she was born into one of the most wonderful and loving families who advocated for her from day one. As a future teacher, I want to also be my students' advocate during their school career. So many people do not help fight for the services their students need and I want to change that.
  • Gina's mother wanted her to have the best education possible. During a school tour, she noticed a teacher, Ms. Kathy, that was so caring and loving that she fought for Gina to be in her classroom. As a future teacher, I want to be just like Ms. Kathy. I want to make sure I am gentle and loving to my students. One of the most important parts of teaching is establishing a rapport with your students. Students will not learn from teachers they dislike or are uninterested in.
  • For the next 10 years of school, Gina was not being aided in learning socialization, peer interaction, or communication. Gina's parents continued to hear reports on "what Gina was not doing" and how she was not meeting goals. No information was given on how to modify programs to help Gina reach her goals. As a future teacher, I want to make sure to focus on creating goals on what my children can do rather than what they cannot do. That is how meaningful learning a goals begin to develop. I also want to push their abilities and establish a relationship with the parents so that we can best help the child live a fulfilling life and be an important part of society after school ends.
