  • PARIS, Collège Françoise Dupont...Conversation between Marinette and Adrien
  • Hey Adrien, Do u know that one of the most terrifying subsistence crisis to happen was in our country back in 18th century
  • Sure!
  • Yeah but do you know about THE GREAT BENGAL FAMINE OF 1943? it was no less than that. Let's go inside and discuss further on this topic
  • Series of events which caused the Bengal crisis were:- 1) A relatively bad harvest in winter crop of 1942, led to supply shortages. 2) Occupation of Burma by Japan in 1942 resulted in restriction on rice imports from Burma. 3) Restriction on inter-state trade of rice and other food grains at the time further aggravated the issue. This was lifted temporarily for eastern states but then put back again as the rice prices in other states also began rising.
  • Primary reason of Famine in Bengal was Shortages in Rice and a series of events which led to a disaster
  • Wow! Adrien that's a lot of useful info let me brief u about the causes of 18th century crisis of France
  • he three causes which led to the subsistence crisis in France are as follows1) The population of France rose from about 23 million in 1715 to 28 million in 1789. This led to a rapid increase in the demand for food grains. Production of grains could not keep pace with the demand. So the price of bread which was the staple diet of the majority rose rapidly.2) Most workers were employed as labourers in workshops whose owner fixed their wages. But wages did not keep pace with the rise in prices. So the gap between the poor and the rich widened.3) Things became worse whenever drought or hail reduced the harvest. This led to a subsistence crisis, something that occurred frequently in France during the Old Regime.
  • The Great bengal Famine was a major famine that claimed lives of around 2.1–3 million people. The deaths were predominantly caused due to starvation and diseases like malaria and cholera that got worsened because of population displacement, malnutrition, poor sanitation and paucity of health care.
  • Subsistence crisis in France led to creating a distress among people as they had to struggle for their basic needs such as Bread (their staple diet) and It gave a spark to the revolution as it created a feeling of hatred for the ruler. Moreover As peasants lack work in farm activities this led to their involvement in trade, industries, etc.
