  • The Earthquake
  • Written By Ali CristobalIllustrations from Storyboard ThatInformation fromBritannica Kids National Geographic
  • One day Peter was sitting at his desk in his room... Suddenly he felt shaking and his stuff started to fall off his shelves.
  • Oh No!! It's an earthquake!!
  • What's an earthquake? Well...
  • An earthquake is when tectonic plates on Earth's crust move and hit each other.
  • Tectonic plates are always moving and colliding on Earth's surface, most of the time we just don't feel it because the collisions are so small.
  • Overtime, when enough pressure builds up, the plates can shift in a fault.
  • Earthquake's occur all around the world but, mainly around The Ring of Fire.
  • The Ring of Fire surrounds many tectonic plates. This causes the most powerful earthquakes in the world!
  • "Around 90% of earthquakes occur around the Ring of Fire."
  • FUN FACT:
  • Earthquakes are measured by something called a seismograph.
  • A seismograph measures an earthquake from a scale of 1-12. This is called The Mercalli scale which measures the destruction caused by the earthquake.
  • Another scale used by a seismograph is called the Richter scale. The Richter scale measures the amount of energy released by an earthquake. The highest energy ever recored was 9.5!
  • Earthquakes happen all over the world!
