Farewell Francisco, I hope Horatio will see it as well.
Goodnight Bernardo and Horatio. I hope Horatio that you see the apparition!
Marcellus joins the two as they wait to see the ghost that wanders around the castle at night.
Peace, break thee off! Look where it comes again.
In the same figure like the King that's dead.
This ghost means doom for Denmark. We must tell Hamlet and have him see this ghost for it will surely speak to its son.
Hello subjects, I inform you of my recent marriage to Queen Gertrude after King Hamlet's death. I also am sending my two best men to King Fortinbras who has sent me a letter saying he is coming for the lands King hamlet took.
"My thoughts and wishes bend again toward France / And bow them to your gracious leave and pardon"
Farewell then Laertes!
"Have you your father's leave"
He does, my Lord
The King exclaims to Hamlet that it is no use weeping forever about his dad's death for everyone dies. He also tells Hamlet to think of him (Claudius) as his new father.
"O, that this too, too sullied flesh would melt, / Thaw, and resolve itself into a dew, / Or that everlasting had not fixed / His canon 'gainst." How has my mother remarried after two short months, and to this far inferior brother. Curse me.
Hamlet meets up with Horatio, Marcellus, and Bernardo who explain to Hamlet about the ghost they saw. They explain it looked just like King Hamlet in his war and that Hamlet needs to wait with them to see the ghost.
"My father's spirit-- in arms! All is not well. I doubt some foul play. Would the night were come! Till then, sit still, my soul. Foul deeds will rise, / Though all the earth o'erwhelm them, to men's eyes."
Ophelia, how is your relationship with Hamlet?
Well I forbid you from seeing him again. He does not truly love you due to his position of nobility. You must rebuff his affections.
I am not really sure father.
Voltimand and Cornelius exit...
Later at night the ghost reappears again. Hamlet decides to follow the ghost because he believes it is the spirit of his father. Hamlet tells his friends to go away and they do at first but then decide to follow him later on in case the ghost leads him to danger.
The ghost tells Hamlet to kill Claudius for he poisoned him which is how he died. He orders Hamlet to get revenge and exclaims that he believes even his own wife played a role in his death. Hamlet makes his friends swear on their lives to never reveal what they have seen. In addition, he exclaims to them that he might act mad, but they must not let anyone know that they too know about his motives.
"Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder."
My loyal servant Reynaldo. Will you please go to England and find out from locals without revealing you know Laertes, what they think of my son? "Observe his inclination in yourself."
"I shall, my lord."
Ophelia rushes in and explains to Polonius that Hamlet came to her in all ripped up clothing looking as a man released from hell. She says he came to speak of horrors.
"Mad for thy love?"
"Come, go with me. I will go seek the King. tis is the very ecstasy of love... That hath made him mad. I am sorry that with better judgement I had not coted him."
"My lord, I do not know, / But truly I do fear it."
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern; due to you being of childhood friends with Hamlet, I ask that you use your friendship with him to find out what has Hamlet so down and upset.
"We both obey, / And here give up ourselves in the full bent / To lay our service freely at your feet, / To be commanded."
Voltimand and Cornelius enter with news of Fortinbras...
King Claudius, King Fortinbras rebuked Fortinbras for attempting to make war on us, and Fortinbras swore he would never again attack us. The Norwegian king has urged him to use the army he had assembled, to attack the Poles now instead of us. He has therefore sent a request back that Prince Fortinbras’s armies be allowed safe passage through Denmark on their way to attack the Poles.
Thank you for telling me but I will worry about this later.
"At such a time I'll loose my daughter to him. Be you and hide an arras then. Mark the encounter. If he love her not... / Let me be no assistant for a state, / But keep a farm and carters"
Queen Gertrude and Claudius, I must inform you that your son is mad and i know why. It is due to his love for Ophelia. It is making him go insane and I will prove it.
"We will try it."
Hamley enters and beings to have a conversation with Polonius. He pretends to not know who Polonius is as he is trying to play himself off as mad. However, he begins to anger Polonius greatly
"What do you read, my lord?"
"Though this be madness, yet there is method in't."
"words."
"words"
"Words"
Hamlet, we are here "to visit you , my lord, no other occasion." We have heard that you are depressed and as your friends we want to know why.
Don't lie to me because I know my mother and Claudius sent for you. However, " I have of late, but wherefore I know not, lost all my mirth, forgone all custom of exercises... what a piece of work is man, how noble in reason... man delights not me, no, nor women neither"
Following in the play, Polonius and Hamlet's friends inform him about a play coming to perform for him to cheer him up. When the actors arrive, Hamlet has them preform a play about the Trojan war with Priam and Pyrrhus. Hamlet loves the performance and asks the actors if he could add some lines to their performance of "The Murder of Gonzago" for the next day and they agree.
Curse me. The player was able to obtain such emotion for such long dead characters that mean nothing to him. However, here am I. I can't even get close to such strong emotions for my father. I am weak, and have been completely unable to carry out this revenge. I need to be stronger. I must
"I'll have these players / Play something like the murder of my father / Before mine uncle. I'll observe his looks... If he do blench, / I know my course... The play's the thing / Wherein I'll catch the conscience of the King."
Hamlet will not explain what has happened to him to cause him to be in such melancholy. However, he is excited for the play.
That delights us that he is looking forward to the play. We will make sure to be present.
Polonius and Claudius begin their plan to hide and see Hamlet's interaction with Ophelia...
" To be or not to be-that is the question: / Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer / The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, / Or to take arms against a sea of troubles / And, by opposing, end them. To die, to sleep- / No more..."
"No, not I. I never gave you aught."
Hamlet, I wish to give you back your letters.
"I say we will have no more marriage... To a nunnery, go."
