- Exposition
- Miss Emily Grierson died and the whole town went to her funeral, some with curiosity to see the inside of her house and others because of respect.
- Rising action
- Years before the people of the town started to complain with the mayor because there was a horrible smell coming from Emily's house. As a solution, the people sneak into the house and spread lime for the smell to go away.
- Rising action
- A year before the smell, Emily met a man called Homer Barron. She wanted to marry him but he insisted that he was not a marrying man. Therefore Emily went to buy arsenic, and the people of the town thought she was going to use it to kill herself because of Barron.
- Climax
- Back to present, the people of the town went up to the room who no one had seen in forty years, and broke down the door to enter.
- Falling action
- The room was decked and furnished as for a bridal and in the bed layed down a skeleton of a man.
- Resolution
- The people took a close look to the bed and found a gray hair of Emily in the pillow next to the skeleton.
