  • John Ledyard was one of the first Americans to see the northwest coast in 1778. John was a part of captain cooks expedition. John dreamed of organizing a profitable American fur trade. John Ledyard never got to pursue his dream. He got thrown in jail, out of the country. Short while after he died.

  • Starting in 1783 and for the next 20 years Thomas Jefferson wanted to send a expedition to explore more of the united states. In 1803, when Jefferson was president, he hopped back on his dream when Napoleon, the emperor of France sold all of the Louisiana purchase to the united states.
  • Mountain men
  • Thomas chose his secretary and friend, Meriwether Lewis to lead the exploration team. In November of 1803, Lewis and his friend, captain William Clark set out form St. Louis with a company of about 40 women including Clarks black slave York. The men wintered among the Mandan Indians, which there they hired as interpreters, Toussaint Charbonneau and his wife, Sacajawea.

  • The pacific northwest fur trade began with sailing ships bartering with a few coastal Indian tribes for sea otter pelts. Soon an island fur trade developed with trading posts and forts.
  • In the 1820s and 1830s, mountain men trapped beaver and animals for their pelts. As in their name mountain men lived in the mountains by themselves or in small groups. once a summer the mountain men gathered to sell and buy other furs.

  • Lieutenant Charles Wilkes commanded a U.S expedition which took place in 1841. The united states knew very little about the Puget Sound and one of Wilkes tasks was to explore it and determine its value to the untied states. The deep, protected harbors of Puget sound made a powerful impression on Wilkes, especially after losing a ship on the treacherous Columbia bar.
