- Fort Wagner: Congress left African Americans join the union navy and army. Massachusetts's was one of the most first states to organize black regiments. In the 54th Massachusetts's infantry, black soldiers protested that they did not get equal pay as white soldiers. At Lincolns urging they were granted equal pay. The Massachusetts's 54th was sent to South Carolina to take part in attack on fort Wagner. The men were faced with worries of untested troops and being sold into slavery. African Americans fought with great courage in the War.
- Appomattox: Lincoln made General Grant leader. In May 1864, Grant invaded Virginia. Grants losses were almost as much as Lees entire army. Grant ordered General Philip to wage total war in Virginias grain rich Shenandoah Valley. His army set the city ablaze.The reelection Of Lincoln: Northern Democrats nominated General George McCellan to run against Lincoln. Luckily, Shenandoah valleys destruction and Shermans capture made views on Lincoln change and he was reelected.

- After burning Atlanta, Sherman marched through Georgia and destroyed everything valuable. In December 1864, Sherman captured Savanah, Georgie. Then the Carolinas and then he waited for Grants attack in Richmond. For nine months Grants forces battered Lees army. Lee went to Wilmer McLeans house in the village of Appomattox Court House to surrender his army. Grants terms of surrender were generous. Confederate soldiers could go home if they promised to fight no longer. They could take their belongings, and get food. Lee accepted. As Lee returned to headquarters, union troops g=began to celebrate, but Lee said "The war is over," he said "the rebels are our countrymen again"
