- In 1831, the Supreme Court handed down a decision about the forcible movement of natives. What did they say?
- Native Americans were being forced off their lands so that the white Americans could expand westward because to their belief it's their destiny to do so, this was called Manifest Destiny.
- Why did the Americans want the natives to move west of the Mississippi River?
- It gave President Jackson the power to negotiate removal treaties with the Natives and push them to lands further west

- The court was in favor of the Cherokee during their case and stated that the Cherokee had the right to self-government, and declared Georgia's extension of state law over them to be unconstitutional.
- The Americans wanted the Native Americans to move west of the Mississippi River because most did not expect the U.S. to extend past it while President Jackson claimed it was to give them a peaceful place to self-govern themselves.
- The Cherokee were forced to walk the long journey to the West. About 4,000 Native Americans died. Their forced journey became known as the Trail of Tears.
