  • How does the Freedom of Speech work?
  • Today we're talking about Freedom of speech. It's the first Amendment in the Constitution, which we should have learn in this class.
  • Why did we make this law in the first place?
  • It's interesting. Can you tell us more about Freedom of speech?
  • The main purpose of this law is we have the right to stand up in the class right now and speak your words, share your opinions,. There's a catch though, if you say something rude or uncalled for you would have to be most likely punished for it
  • Freedom of speech, of the press, of association, of assembly and petition - this set of guarantees, protected by the First Amendment, comprises what we refer to as freedom of expression. The Supreme Court has written that this freedom is "the matrix, the indispensable condition of nearly every other form of freedom." Without it, other fundamental rights, like the right to vote, would wither and die.
  • The path to freedom was long and arduous. It took nearly 200 years to establish firm constitutional limits on the government's power to punish "seditious" and "subversive" speech. Many people suffered along away, such as Sidney Street, jailed in 1969 for burning an American flag on a Harlem street corner to protest the shooting of civil rights figure James Meredith.
