  • Madame Valmonde remembers as she drives to the neighbor's farm to meet her adopted daughter Desiree and her daughter's new baby, "it seems but yesterday that Desiree was nothing more than a baby herself," and recalls how her husband, Monsieur Valmonde, discovered her at the homeowner's gate.
  • Dada!
  • What kind of parent would abandon their child?
  • Desiree was discovered 18 years after she was last seen. When Armand Aubigny met Desiree at the spot where she was found, "the desire that began in him that day, when he saw her at the gate, rushed forward like an earthquake, or like a wildfire." They eventually married and had a child.
  • Zzzz...
  • I adore you, Armand.
  • I adore you as well, sweetheart.
  • "I thought you'd be astonished."
  • When Desiree's mother arrived, she saw that the baby wasn't their color and questioned her husband's opinion. Desiree assured her that he loved him and that he was delighted. However, that changed three months later when Armand had a significant transformation. He no longer looks Désirée in the eyes and makes an effort to ignore her and the baby.
  • "This isn't the child!"
  • Desiree pushed Armond to explain what the kid meant to him, saying that the baby was not white. Desiree then wrote to her mother to explain what had occurred. Her mother tells her to return home. Desiree and her baby were on their way. She cuts over a field of sharp grass rather than walking down the road to Valmondé. She and her kid vanish into the swamp and are never seen again.
  • "I can't believe what just occurred!"
  • Armand builds a campfire a few weeks later. He tells his slaves to throw the expensive items he bought and Desire and the baby into the flames. He then adds boxes of Desiree's letters to himself until he discovers one in particular.
  • Yes, sir, just as you wish.
  • Get rid of all of the fine clothes as well as the baby's belongings
  • The problem is solved when Armand reads his mother's letter to his father, which says, "Above all, I thank God for having so arranged our lives that our dear Armand will never know that his mother, who adores him, belongs to a race that is cursed with the brand of slavery." He then realizes that Desiree was of no relation to black people and blamed Desiree for nothing, and it was already too late."
  • WHAT HAVE I DONE!!
