Nicolet was a son of Marguerite Nicolet and Thomas Nicolet he also had a brother named Gills .His father was a messenger for the king of Paris.As a young boy,he lived among the Native Americans and learned skills such as fur trading and exploring.

Life's Work

In 1618, Nicolet immigrant to Quebec.He trained to be an interpreter for a company of merchants.He learned the language of the first Nations.He went to live with Algonquins on Allumette Island friendly Native Americans settlement along the Ottawa River fur trade route.He stayed for nine years and ran a store and traded with Native people in the area in 1637 he married Marque.

Later Years

Nicolet was the first European to explore Lake Michigan in 1634 he became the first European to explore Wisconsin.He and another French explorers had learned from the Ho-chunk people who lived there.He wen't down the Fox river and traveled down it until it began to widen.

Contributions

Nicolet was given the accomplishment of discovering Lake Michigan and the state of Wisconsin .Jean Nicolet died by drowning on November 1,1642 when his boat tipped in a storm while he was traveling along the ST. Lawrence River.
