- This is the first scene of the book that sets up what will happen in the book and in this scene we see five aristocrats pledge their support to the plan. The plan is to kidnap the true prince after his graduation from the academy in the northern kingdom of Loch Talam. Kill him and send Rahim back to Akram in his place. Push for a quick coronation due to the king's failing health, and once Rahim was installed on the throne, rule through him .
- While doing the final exam, Javan encounters a dragon that is trying to kill him that wasn't part of his plan and so he will have to fight the dragon with no weapons and when he dives toward a cache of rocks that is sitting in the middle of his ruined tunic his hand closes on rock and then when the dragon flies towards him again he lets the rock fly and the rock strucks the dragon in the left eye and then he sprints down the incline and toward the path that wound through the next cluster of craggy hills and when he gets to the academy he yells for a weapon and other students join him to fight the dragon off.
- When Javan jolts from unconscisness after his body hits water and then he starts to drown but thankfully his feet touch the bottom of the lake and so he looks around the lake floor for anything that he can use to free himself from the ropes that have been tied so his hands and feet so he finds a rock and scrapes a rope against the rock as hard as he could to free himself from the ropes so that he could get himself back on land and his plan works
- This is where Javan attacks the impostor and they both fight each other and Javan fights the boy because the boy killed the headmaster at the academy that was like a father to him but when the guards get out of the carriage they grab Javan roughly, hauling him off the impostor and out of the vehicle. Javan tries to protest that he is the true prince he could prove it but the guards won't listen to him because the guards are on the Traitor Prince side and this leads to him being thrown into Maqbara, Akram's most dangerous prison.
- This scene is where Javan kneels beside a crate that is in a storage closet that Sajda showed him earlier on in the book and begins to pray to Yl' Haliq. But then a breath of peace goes through his body and an idea forms in his head that makes him clench his hands together as hope, soft and fragile unfurls in his chest and took root. He was right where he is supposed to be, he was meant to hurt the way his people hurt, to see the truth of Akram from their eyes, their grief was his to bear, their injustices his to make right, he was destined to lose what he'd thought was his so that he can gain something far more important- Wisdom, he was destined to learn to fight for his kingdom, for his people and he was destined to meet Sajda. then sajda drops out of the crack as if she read his mind
- At the last competition where Javan can get a boom for winning by the king and instead of asking for his freedom he asks for the cuffs to be removed from the warden's slave and for her to be set free. when Sajda tries to protest Javan says to her I made you a promise and now I'm keeping it, tears gathered in the back of her throat and then she makes a sacrifice of her own and this is when she reveals herself to the crowd and then she reveals herself to the impostor and says that she can create nightmares and then she asks Rahim if he impersonated the true prince and killed the king slowly he nods and then faces Javan and says "people of Akram I give you the real prince Javan"!
