  • Finding the Surface area of a 3D shape is not that hard - as long as you know the correct formula.
  • So, what is the surface area of a shape?
  • Surface area is the total amount of space that all of the surfaces that an object takes up. So, it's the sum of all of the surfaces of a that object.
  • But each shape has it's own separate formula. Oh boy!
  • There's many 3D shapes. How about you tell me about a couple of the most common shapes we might encounter.
  • First, you must identify the shape you are working with and memorize the surface area (SA) formula. It just makes calculating the SA much easier.
  • Surface area of a sphere seems interesting....
  • All right! Lets just pick the Suface Area (SA) of the sphere. Because it has a curved surface, the SA must use the constant pi. SA of a sphere = 4πr 2
  • r = The radius of the sphere is half the diameter, or half the distance from one side of the center of the sphere to the other.
  • Example if r = 2 cm, π= 3.14r 2= 2 2= 4So, the surface area = 4π4 = 50.24 cm
