- Lennie and George have just run from Weed due to being wanted by the cops. They escape off near the Salinas river where they plan to work on a nearby ranch .
- Lennie and George have to overcome the many challenges that are created because of lennies mental disability, Finding a job can be hard because Lennies often accidently gets them into trouble.
- Lennie is highly disliked by the boss' son Curley and both are often involved in trouble due to their conflict. Curleys wife aggitates the men is order or attention.
- Lennie's rough handling kills one of the pups striking panic in him. Soon after Curley's wife comes in seeking for attention and learns of Lennie's fixation for feeling soft things. She allows for him to feel her hair but gets distressed once Lennie refuses to let go. This panic Lennie further and in an attempt to quieten her, he accidently breaks her neck.
- Lennie flees to the bush George told him to go if anything bad were to happen. The ranch hands are mad with Lennie and wish to kill him.
- George arrives to the bush before the other men and as an act of mercy, kills Lennie before Curley can get to him.
